You said “there are plenty of "old" covenants (old in the sense that they predate newer ones). There is the covenant with Noah, the one with Abraham, the one with David, etc. When you make a new covenant, that does not invalidate the previously existing ones.”

This is where Xians, particularly fundies like Gary, get screwed up with their “replacement” theology.  G-d made a covenant with Noah.  That covenant stands.

G-d made a covenant with Abraham.  G-d  reconfirmed that covenant with Isaac.  He recommitted it with Jacob.  G-d made a new covenant, built on the old, with Moses.

None of the “old” covenants went away.

This is what Jeremiah prophesizes.  After the Diaspora G-d will make it clear to the world that Israel is STILL his beloved.  He will make a new covenant with the houses of Judah and Israel that will be so apparent to Israel and the world that we won’t need to teach the word of G-d.  Instead Torah will be inscribed in the heart of every Jew.

It is like an old married couple who, after 50 years, renew their wedding vows.  Per Gary this would mean the old marriage is dissolved and each marries someone new.  After all, it is a “new” covenant!  What it really means is that after 50 years of marriage they are so committed to one another that they renew their commitment.

G-d says as much in Jeremiah:

“Return, O backsliding children,” says the L-rd, “for I am married to you.  I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.” (Jeremiah 3:14)

“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the L-rd, “I will put My law within them, and on their hearts I will write it; and I will be their G-d, and they shall be My people.  No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” says the L-rd, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”
